Dato' Abdul Latif’s career began with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1975. He later joined Malaysian International Shipping Corporation Berhad and, from 1982 to 1992, he was with Perbadanan Nasional Shipping Line Berhad (PNSL) where he held a number of senior positions within the PNSL Group. In 1990 he became a founder Director of Mitsui OSK Lines (M) Sdn Bhd and remains as the Chairman since his retirement in 2005. He is a former Chairman of the International Shipowners' Association of Malaysia and Vice-Chairman of the Malaysian Shipowners' Association. He was previously the Chairman of Penang Port Sdn Bhd from January 2004 to December 2009, as well as Executive Chairman of Realmild (M) Sdn Bhd, Radicare (M) Sdn Bhd and Labuan Shipyard & Engineering Sdn Bhd from March 2006 to December 2009. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (UK) and Chairman of Amanah Raya Asian Finance Islamic Marine Fund.

Dato' Abdul Latif had been the Chairman of Disciplinary Committee (“DC”) of Bursa Malaysia Berhad (“Bursa”) since 12 May 2004 until dissolution of the DC on 11 May 2008. He was then appointed as the Chairman of Market Participants Committee of Bursa since 12 May 2008.
